Handspun Wool Yarns

Our yarn is made entirely by hand, here on Eday. I wash, card and spin the fleeces all by hand. I then ply the yarn for strength.

Hand processing yarn has a lot of benefits.  By processing the fleeces on at a time (instead of in bulk a wool mill), I can preserve the unique characteristics and colour of each fleece, i.e. they are not mixed to together into just ‘brown’. There is an amazing variety in natural colours of yarn and I think it is worth preserving.

The scouring (washing) process for wool can also use a lot of harsh chemicals. Washing by hand (with just a small amount of laundry detergent), uses much fewer chemicals and is much less harsh on the wool fibres. It also preserves some of the lanolin, which helps waterproof the wool.

I can also spin the yarn gently, which prevents the yarn from becoming harsh from over twisting and preserves a loft of loft in the yarn, which makes it much more thermally insulating.

However, the most important (and fun!) part of hand processing is that I can trace everything back to my sheep!

Fine Yarns

The fleece from my Shetland sheep goes into making fine weight yarn. Shetland sheep are famous from their extremely fine fleeces, which can be spun up into superfine yarn to make Shetland lace shawls.

Our yarn is hand spun to a fine weight, which is suitable for delicate knitwear and pieces that sit close to the skin. It does make up to a nice weight for lace knitting too.

All our fine weight yarns are sold in 18g skeins.

Aran Yarns

I was lucky enough to start off my sheep keeping journey with half a dozen sheep from Dr.Cox at Breck Farm on Eday. These sheep have been bred on Eday for over 30 years, and over that time they’ve been specially selected for long open fleeces and interesting colours.

They make for uniquely coloured yarns with loads of loft, perfect for fluffy hats, socks and jumpers!

All our Aran yarns are sold in 25g skeins.

Handmade Knitwear

There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!

I have spent 4 years stress testing the patterns for these pieces in the worst weather that Orkney can throw at it. I think each piece has been through at least a dozen prototypes, to keep them perfectly windproof and elastic over time. This means our knitwear is will stay put even in the worst weather, keep that weather off of you and keep you at the perfect temperature while doing it.

Weatherproof Hats

Our Hats have been prototyped for the perfect fit and weather-tested for three years- so they won’t come off your head no matter how windy it gets!

Our handspun yarn is spun to be strong yet very lofty, with a lot of insulating air. Wool is also naturally water-resistant, so you’ll stay warm and dry .

Earwarmers

Who doesn’t want warm ears? Our ear warmers are tightly knit in the round, to keep the biting the wind off your ears.

The Eday Weatherbeater

This is the ultimate in versatile knitwear. I don’t leave the house without my one! I made these to be ideal for outdoor work and hiking.

They are made from our super-soft shetland yarn .

Wear it however you want!
